The difference is underneath the surface wherein the manufacturers glue thin layers of wood together under high pressure to create boards instead on one solid plank. Due to this multi-layer construction the plank remains more stable dimensionally that flooring contractors can install on, above or under grade. This means it is less susceptible to the effects of humidity and moisture. Another reason why people love it so much is that it can go directly over certain types of old flooring which is not possible with solid hardwood.
